"WILL I LOOK BULKY IF I LIFT WEIGHTS?"
As a nutritionist I’ve
always come across questions from women such as –Will lifting weights make me
look huge?
OR statements like “I
don’t want to lift weights because if I leave it I will add more weight” “I
don’t like a masculine look”
Let me correct all you
ladies there-Weight training/Resistance training DOES NOT make you look bulky!!
Yes, that’s true! Lifting those
dumbbells won’t make you bulky, but think twice before you bite into that
cupcake, I know of a lot of women who stay away from weight training because of
the fear that weight training will make them big & bulky. This is one of the biggest
myths floating around. If your
aim is to go beyond just losing weight and include things like “looking awesome”
and “being strong”, then I am going to ask you to start weight training.
LIFTING WEIGHTS WON’T MAKE YOU HUGE/BULKY
First off, women do not have the kind
of testosterone levels (hormone significantly high among males) that are needed
to bulk up like the way men do. Women
cannot put on muscle mass as easily as men. You may however find yourself with
a better butt, toned abs, strength, confidence and positive outlook. So stop worrying and start lifting weights.
YOU WILL BURN A LOT MORE FAT
Weight training, is the only way to burn fat as it improves your BMR. When you lift weights, your muscles are
broken down, and then reconstructed over the next 24-48 hours. While your body
is reform those muscles, it is engaging more calories and energy to make the
process happen. This means that at resting( sitting on the couch, at relax
state) too, you are burning more calories, Weight training along with cardio
will produce a more efficient weight loss effect than doing only cardio.
Strong is the new sexy. Being
smarter in your exercise make like add resistance training/weight training make
you strong and toned body. You can work
on your problem areas by doing targeted exercises along with total body
exercises. You cannot change the shape of your body with cardio alone. It’s not
necessary you have to join gym you can do body weight exercise too like push up
, squats with resistance tube, planks etc.
YOU WILL ENJOY LIFTER’S HIGH AND FEEL AWESOME
Besides helping you get into great
shape, lifting weights can also boost your endorphins (the feel good hormones),
lower your blood sugar, relieve stress, help balance your hormones, and
increase your bone density.
OLDER WOMEN SHOULD ALSO LIFT WEIGHTS
When you don’t do weight
training, your body starts de-mineralizing the calcium- magnesium deposition
from the bones making it weak. When you
start training, body starts creating the opposite scenario of letting the body
keep the calcium- magnesium deposited on the bones. It protects your joints so that they can tolerate the loads you
place on them from day-to-day activities. Weight training also supports posture
and keeps the body upright. It makes you look and feel younger.
